Lucille Ball-Facts I Bet You Didn't Know About America's Favorite Red Head

by - August 27, 2020

Lucy dropped out of high school. She then moved to New York City to attend drama school. She was only 15 years old at the time.

Lucy was the first pregnant actress to play a pregnant woman on television."Lucy Goes To The Hospital" aired on January 19, 1953. Twelve hours before she given birth to Ricky Jr. It was a national event with 73% of Americans tuned in that night to celebrate with the beloved couple.

Lucy and Desi's romance was considered taboo at the time because she was 6 years older than him.

During the Italy episode where she performed in one of her most famous scenes she almost drowned. While stomping grapes and fighting with the Italian actress (Teresa), due to language barrier, she was held down longer than she was supposed to be and had grapes up her nose!

I Love Lucy didn't premiere until Lucy was 40 years old! Imagine creating that masterpiece at that age, especially back then.

Lucille Ball, along with her mother and brother were actually registered as part of the communist party. She explained it was about honoring her grandfather that had passed and she had no intentions of ever voting communist. Desi would tell reporters "The only thing red about Lucy is her hair, and even that is not legitimate". Which brings to my next fun fact...

Lucy was not a true red head but was born a brunette. She colored her hair for the I Love Lucy and for years after the show was long gone.

She was the first female to create and run a Hollywood studio-Desilu Productions.

Contrary to what people believe, Lucy and Vivian Vance were not close besties as the show portrayed. They didn't get along at the when they first started working together and although they had a inseparable bond and great chemistry during episodes, in real life they were in constant competition and often feuded

Lucy and Desi were the first interracial couple to air on TV.  Producers wanted to take a radio show she had started and turn it into the show casting a white husband but Ball insisted that she star along side her real life Cuban husband or wouldn't do the show. Eventually they gave in and the moment in history was set.

Lucille didn't have children until she was 40 years old, a rarity at the time. She had suffered in silence through three miscarriages which you did not talk about publicly. She went on to have Lucie at age 40 on July 17, 1951 and Ricky Jr. at 42 on January 19, 1953.

Surprisingly Ball and Arnaz divorced before I Love Lucy was even on air! They got divorced in 1944 and remained separated for seven years. Their divorce in the 60's was the second.

Lucille ball was the ultimate feminist, breaking barriers for all women. From being the first woman to own a Hollywood production studio to being the first real woman comedian. Creating a ground breaking television show starring the first interracial couple and first cast of pregnant actress on TV were no small accomplishments.  Standing up for her beliefs and fighting for everything she wanted and achieved. Although no one could make us laugh quite like her, Lucy was a self-made successful business woman and there is nothing funny about that. Beloved by all to this day, Her legacy will live on forever and will always hold a special place in our hearts. We love you Lucy!
